Port Alberni Lighthouse & Maritime Museum
Right on the Harbour Quay, you’ll find the Port Alberni Maritime Discovery Centre, a unique attraction built into a charming lighthouse-style building. It’s run by the Port Alberni Maritime Heritage Society and was completed in the early 2000s—combining authentic maritime history with a scenic waterfront setting.
The structure includes the original lantern from the 1891 Chrome Island Lighthouse, elegantly mounted on top of a newer tower built in the 1990s . It still lights up (usually during daylight hours) and gives the place that classic coastal museum vibe.
Inside, you’ll learn about lighthouse life, early coastal navigation tools, historic vessels like the Uchuck and Lady Rose, and even the dramatic 1964 tsunami that reshaped Alberni Inlet. The Hutcheson Gallery next door adds rotating exhibits, think ship models, local rescue vessels, and interactive displays on West Coast maritime culture.

Take a Ride on the Alberni Pacific Railway
In the summer, the Alberni Pacific Railway offers scenic rides from the waterfront near Harbour Quay, giving you a chance to experience one of Port Alberni’s most nostalgic attractions. Step back in time with the Summer Steam Express, a unique heritage experience featuring the legendary No. 7 Baldwin Steam Locomotive. Built in 1929, this 90-ton 2-8-2 saddle tank engine has been lovingly restored by dedicated volunteers and is back on the rails for the first time since 2018. It’s a rare chance to enjoy the sights, sounds, and sensations of true steam travel, complete with whistles, hissing valves, and the rhythmic chug of the engine.

There’s a new Quay-to-Quay Pathway currently in development, designed to connect Harbour Quay with other areas along the waterfront. It’s still taking shape, but it’ll be exciting to see it expand in the years ahead as Port Alberni grows and updates its harborfront.
