Cox Bay Beach and Lookout
Updated February 19, 2026

Cox Bay Beach and its lookout combine one of Tofino’s best surf beaches with a short, steep hike to a panoramic viewpoint above the bay. Set on the west coast of Vancouver Island, this spot is ideal if you want to spend time on the sand and then climb for a big-picture view of the Pacific Ocean and Clayoquot Sound.

The beach itself is easygoing and family-friendly, with a long stretch of sand for walking, watching surfers and storm watching in winter. The lookout trail at the south end of the bay feels much more rugged. It is an unmarked, muddy route that climbs quickly through coastal forest to an open bluff. Confident hikers who do not mind getting dirty are rewarded with sweeping views across Cox Bay and the surrounding mountains.

What to expect at Cox Bay Beach and Lookout

  • Location: Just south of Tofino in the Pacific Rim region, about a 10 minute drive from town, with easy access to accommodation and restaurants nearby.
  • Trail stats: Roughly 3 km return and about 1.5 hours including time at the top. The distance is short, but the climb is steep and technical.
  • Trail style: An unofficial, rooty and often very muddy path with a short rope-assisted rock section near the top. Expect slippery sections in all but the driest weather.
  • Views: Big coastal panorama over Cox Bay Beach, offshore islands and forested peaks, especially impressive at sunset or on clear days.
  • Best timing: Plan your hike for low tide so it is easier to reach and spot the trailhead from the beach. Avoid stormy days if you are not comfortable with slick mud and wind on exposed rock.
  • Who it is for: Best suited to experienced or adventurous hikers and older kids who are comfortable on steep, muddy trails. It is not recommended for younger children, beginners or anyone with balance or mobility concerns.
  • Beach time: Before or after your hike, enjoy the wide sandy beach for walking, tide pooling and surfing, or simply sit back and watch the waves.

Cox Bay Lookout Hike

The Cox Bay Lookout hike is a thrilling and rugged adventure that rewards hikers with spectacular coastal views. While short in distance, this hike packs plenty of challenges and gives you a different perspective of the dramatic west coast of Canada.

From its steep climbs to its rewarding summit, Cox Bay Lookout is an incredible way to connect with the natural beauty of the area.

How to Get to the Trailhead

Accessing the trail is part of the adventure. The Cox Bay Lookout hike begins at the southern end of Cox Bay Beach. It’s important to plan your visit for low tide, as this makes locating the trailhead much easier.

Starting from Maltby Road, you’ll need to walk across the sandy expanse of Cox Bay towards some north-facing rocks. Look carefully between these rocks for the unmarked path that leads into the dense coastal forest.

While there are no official markers or signs to guide the way, most visitors say that with a little patience, the trail is fairly straightforward to locate.

Trail Highlights and What to Expect

The Cox Bay Lookout hike is an out and back trail that is about 3km long, starting from the parking area at Maltby Road. Though short, don’t underestimate its difficulty. The trail is steep and technical, with sections that require careful foot placement over gnarled roots and slippery, muddy ground.

Waterproof hiking shoes or sturdy rubber boots are highly recommended—especially in wetter months when the mud can be thigh-deep in places.

Along the way, you’ll find yourself navigating through thick coastal rainforests while climbing a series of natural, root-covered “steps.” Some sections might require light scrambling, using tree roots and branches for extra grip, especially on the way down.

While it’s not family-friendly or pet-friendly due to the challenging terrain, hikers who are up for a bit of effort will find the adventure rewarding.

The View at the Top

At the summit, the payoff is breathtaking. A small clearing reveals panoramic views of the sprawling Cox Bay Beach below, the sparkling Pacific Ocean stretching into the horizon, and the island’s lush green peaks.

On a clear day, you might even catch a glimpse of Clayoquot Sound. Whether you’re there to snap some photos, enjoy a quiet moment overlooking the waves, or just catch your breath, the summit offers a stunning reward for your efforts. Many visitors describe the scene as unforgettable and worth every bit of the muddy climb.

When to Go and How to Prepare

Cox Bay Beach is accessible all year round, enjoying the sun and sand during the summer months and a great location for storm-watching in the winter months.

The Cox Bay Lookout trail is also accessible year-round, but the conditions can vary dramatically depending on the season. Spring and autumn are particularly muddy, so it’s vital to wear footwear that can handle wet and slippery surfaces.

A lightweight backpack with essentials like water, a snack, and a windbreaker jacket will ensure you’re comfortable throughout the hike. Checking the tide table beforehand is crucial if you’re taking the beach approach, as high tide can make the trailhead more challenging to find.

Keep in mind this hike isn’t ideal for younger kids due to its technical nature. If you’re new to trail-finding, bringing a GPS-enabled phone with the map or following a companion who’s done the hike before can be helpful since there are no formal signs marking the route.
