Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre is an active marine research school that welcomes the public to a few designated areas during the day. It is not a full tourist aquarium, but you can visit the viewpoint, explore the Whale and Touch Lab when open, and see interpretive displays about Bamfield’s coastal ecosystems and early communication history.
What to expect

We stumbled upon the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre (BMSC) by accident, but it turned out to be one of the best ways to kick off our visit to Bamfield.
Start your visit by parking at the lower lot. From there, a short walk uphill leads to a stunning lookout where you can see the West Bamfield Boardwalk and its cluster of colourful waterfront buildings. It’s the kind of view that immediately makes you want to slow down and take it all in.
Along the path, a few informational signs share Bamfield’s history with old photos and fascinating facts that add depth to the village’s scientific and maritime legacy.
At the main entrance, you’ll find a couple of small aquariums a quiet introduction to the marine life studied here. When we visited, there weren’t any students around, so we were able to explore parts of the facility freely. Although the main labs are off-limits due to sensitive studies, we were able to visit the Whale Lab. This educational lab features:
- Flow-through seawater tanks
- A touch tank with live marine invertebrates
- A specialized jellyfish tank
- A collection of marine mammal skeletons
Even though our visit was quick, it was well worth it. The centre offers a unique perspective on Bamfield’s research community and the view of the Bamfield boardwalk from above is worth the stop alone.
About the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre
Established in 1972, the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre is a world-class research and education facility jointly operated by five western Canadian universities: the University of Victoria, University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, University of Alberta, and University of Calgary.
It is located in Bamfield, British Columbia, on the traditional territory of the Huu-ay-aht First Nations.
The centre supports diverse coastal and marine research of the highest calibre and is recognized internationally as one of the leading training and research institutions in the world. It is housed in the original building that served as the western terminus of the British Empire’s worldwide undersea cable system, known as the All Red Line.
Getting to the Marine Sciences Centre
Bamfield itself is remote, and that is part of the appeal. Most visitors either:

If you are travelling without a car, West Coast Trail Express offers seasonal bus service from Victoria and Nanaimo to the Bamfield area.
