I spent five years hunting South Island hikes and missed this one the whole time. Here's what I'd do differently.
The view from the top of Mill Hill is one of the best in the South Island, and you can be standing in it less than 20 minutes after you leave the car. I spent five years hunting new hikes around here before I found this one in June, and my first thought at the summit was that I should have come years ago.
Mill Hill sits about a kilometre off Veterans Memorial Parkway in Langford, maybe 25 minutes from downtown Victoria. I have driven past that turn more times than I can count. For a climb this short with a payoff this big, it might be the most overlooked spot in Langford.

Park at the main lot on Atkins Avenue. There are a couple of pit toilets and a few picnic tables, but no drinking water, so bring your own. Dogs are welcome if you keep them close.
Two trails climb from the lot, Auburn and Calypso. I started up Auburn and felt the burn almost right away. It is wide gravel and it just goes up, with nothing to ease you into it.

There is a noticeable change as the trail climbs into the Garry oaks and arbutus near the top. Arbutus line the path, all twisting red bark, and then the trees open up and you start to see out across Langford. A short side trail leads to a bench, perfectly placed looking out over Esquimalt, a good spot to sit and take it in.

The summit is about 200 metres up, with a stone cairn and a bronze peak-finder that names the mountains around you. The view runs east over Esquimalt Harbour and Victoria, west to the Sooke hills, and out to the Juan de Fuca peaks beyond. I watched turkey vultures ride the thermals below me.
From the top you have a choice. You can finish the loop back down, or keep going on the path that drops down the far side toward the Trans Canada Highway if you want a longer hike. There is no loop back from that way, so it is an out and back. I walked down it a little for a couple more views, then turned around and came back up to finish the loop.

For how central it is, the top stayed quiet the whole time I was up there. The hill is a protected conservation area, set aside for its Garry oak meadows, one of the rarest ecosystems in Canada. Stay on the trail and you help keep it that way.
Here is the one thing I would do differently. I came down the Calypso Trail and liked it far more than the way I went up. It is narrower, with roots and a little light scrambling, and it feels like a real west coast path instead of a gravel road. So do the opposite of what I did: go up Calypso, come down Auburn. You get the better climb and the easier knees on the way down.

The whole loop is about 2 kilometres. You can be up, take in the view, and back at the car inside an hour. If you want to see the trail network before you go, the AllTrails map (affiliate link) lays it out.
Five years I looked for hikes like this and drove right past it. Do not make my mistake. The next clear day you have a spare hour in the Westshore, point the car at Mill Hill.
